How To: Use An EMF Meter

EMF meters detect electromagnetic fields. Paranormal investigators use these devices to detect the presence of spirits since it is thought that spirits need and are made up of energy and electromagnetic fields are said to be a source of this energy. It is important to point out that spirits are not the only things that give off EMF. Appliances, monitors, electrical outlets, and even the human body give off these fields to some degree or another. The trick to using an EMF meter when looking for spirit activity is to know when the reading you're getting is a spirit or nothing more than poor electrical shielding.

Some EMF meters use a needle and some use lights or a digital display. It is important to make sure that you hold the device as still as possible and point it directly in front of you. This will keep the needle from jumping or another type of misreading due to motion and it also lets you know the direction that the reading is coming from.

It is very important to know that many EMF readers are directional. If you get a hit and you turn in place, the hit may seem to disappear on out of the blue. This may lead to a false sense that something paranormal is going on. Usually, when you point the EMF meter back in the direction of the reading, it will spike again.

I have found that the best way to use an EMF detector is to prop it up on a flat surface and stand away from it while attempting to communicate with any spirits in the area. I have found that moving around with the detector during an actual investigation can lead to more false positive hits than not. Propping the device up and asking the spirits to interact with it can produce more solid results that are much harder to disprove.

Usually, quick EMF readings that seem to come from nowhere are a good indication of spirit activity. If you see your reading jump while your device is perfectly still on the floor, you can ask the spirit if it can do it again. If you get another hit, there's a good chance that you have made contact with the other side. You can ask the spirit to respond to your questions using the EMF detector (one hit for yes, two hits for no). Make sure to film this for evidence purposes.

Unless you're an actual scientist, there is likely no need to calibrate your EMF detector for perfectly accurate results. However, if you find yourself needing to have the most accurate results possible, certain technicians will be able to help you in this area. The components in EMF detectors may ware out over time and this could lead to readings that are off. If you buy EMF detectors that are cheap enough, you may not have to worry about this as you can just replace them with new units. You can test the accuracy of your EMF detector with another EMF detector that has recently been calibrated.
